The 2022 IIHF World Championship will be hosted by Finland from 13 to 29 May 2022 as the IIHF announced on 19 May 2017. The host cities of the World Championships are Tampere and Helsinki, of which Tampere's brand-new Nokia Arena will serve as the main venue of the games

On 28 February 2022, the IIHF decided to expel ROC (Russian team was to play under the name "ROC" as doping sanctions) and Belarus from the tournament due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, so Austria and France replaced them

Stages of the Tournament

The entire tournament is divided into different stages: group stages, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

  • Group Stages: As stated above, there are two groups with 8 countries each. In each of the groups, a particular team is required to play the other teams once, totalling 28 matches for each group and 56 matches for the whole group stage matches. Two matches, one from group A and another for group B will be played simultaneously at different Hockey pitches.
  • Quarter-Finals: After the group stages, only the first four teams on the standings from each of the groups qualifies to the quarter-finals. The entire quarter-final matches are played on the 26th of May. The fixtures are drawn inversely between the two groups
  • Semi-Finals: The four winners from the quarter-finals will play out the semi-finals on May 28
  • Finals: The final will be between the winners of the semi-final matches and it will be played on May 29
